Great Neck Baseball League Tridents

Purpose: The Great Neck (GN) Tridents is a supplemental program offered through Great Neck Baseball League (GNBL) for our recreational league players. GNBL partners with D-Bat Virginia Beach to provide additional opportunities and resources to develop skills leading to success and enjoyment as players continue on their journey through organized baseball.

Requirements: To participate, all players are required to register for GNBL recreation baseball in both the fall and spring, although fall recreation season play is optional for GN Tridents players. Spring recreation play is mandatory for GN Tridents players unless they also make their middle school baseball team.

Participation Options: The GN Tridents program consists of three options:

(1) All-Aspects Program (7-8U)

This program teaches the physical and mental aspects of the game of baseball to young players. Age-appropriate, fun instruction occurs 3 Sundays per month at either GNBL facilities or D-Bat Virginia Beach and conducted by professional trainers with the help of GNBL volunteers.

(2) Prospects Program (9-11U)

This program is for the recreational player that desires extra instruction with an eye towards making future GNBL All-Star and/or Trident rosters, or just wants to improve their skills.  Instruction occurs 3 Sundays per month at either GNBL facilities or D-Bat Virginia Beach and conducted by professional trainers with the help of GNBL volunteers.

(3) Sunday Select Program (8-13U)

This program is GNBL’s version of travel baseball. Our objectives are to:

•Focus on skills development and preparation for

competing at the Pony All-Star, middle and high school levels

•Keep costs down and travel local

•Establish a reasonable time commitment from your family

•Establish a safe, welcoming, fun environment for your player

Tryouts are conducted prior to each season (fall and spring), and players will be evaluated by Trident program staff and knowledgeable volunteers from the local baseball community.  There is a minimum skill set necessary to qualify for this program.  When at least 10 qualified players are available at an age group, a roster is established and maintained for the entire season. The maximum number of players per roster is typically 12.

Following selection, evaluations occur to understand better each players’ baseball skill set and design development activities focused on improving both the individual players and their ability to perform as a team. This evaluation isshared with players and their family.  Then, professional trainers work with Trident coaches to develop and improve individual and team play skills through a combination of structured practice, scrimmages, live game, and optional work at home activities.

Sunday Select team practices are at least once during each week at either the GNBL fields or D-Bat Virginia Beach. Sundays will consist of double headers at GNBL or other Hampton Roads area ballfields, or another practice if games are not scheduled.

A unique offering within the Sunday Select Program is the 12U team designated to represent GNBL at a special tournament held each year in Cooperstown NY. This team is selected every fall and made of players willing to make a 1-year commitment to the team and the costs associated with the tournament. To prepare for the tournament, the team plays together in both the GNBL recreation league (Pony Division) and as a Sunday Select team.
